These lettering-based book covers aim to visually tie three separate stories that discuss the exploration of the unknown: Alice in Wonderland, Coraline, and The Wizard of Oz. All three stories focus on a heroine faced with an entrance to another world but each is incredibly different in tone. The lettering in each cover is made to reflect the spirit of these stories yet maintain some cohesiveness in their execution.
Lettering
At first, most of the lettering was done with ink and calligraphy pens but as the project progressed I ventured out into other mediums. For Alice in Wonderland, I wanted a dreamy feeling so I used watercolor. For Coraline a witchy and eerie look was best expressed through charcoal and cut paper. For the Wizard of Oz, iconography pushed me to use red glitter.
Texture
Watercolor was a medium I felt could be versatile enough to cover the matter of all three books. I played with different ways to apply it on the paper as well as removing parts of it before it dried.
